A client taking furosemide has a potassium level of 2.9 mEq/L. Which findings should the nurse expect?

  • AMuscle weakness
  • BLeg cramps
  • CFlattened T waves
  • DPeaked T waves
  • EHyperactive bowel sounds

Rationale

A, B and C

  • AMuscle weakness
  • BLeg cramps
  • CFlattened T waves
  • DPeaked T waves
  • EHyperactive bowel sounds

Furosemide wastes potassium, and 2.9 is below the normal 3.5 to 5.0. Low potassium causes weakness, cramps and flattened T waves. Peaked T waves look right but signal high potassium. Bowel sounds become hypoactive, not hyperactive.

What you'll practise

How it will work

  1. Add your lecture slides or notes, so practice matches what your course covers.
  2. Answer NCLEX-style questions, including select all that apply.
  3. Read the rationale for every option, then redo the ones you missed until they stick.
